Milk. It Does a Body Good…Or Does it?

If you’re like me you have fond memories of your parents saying, “If you want to grow big and strong, you have to finish your milk.” But who knew, years later, that scientists and dermatologists would link “natures perfect food” to the angst of teenage years: ACNE!

According to Dr. William F. Danby, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Dartmouth Medical School and practicing dermatologist, milk raises insulin levels and insulin-like growth hormone levels. These two hormones work together to open the male hormone receptors that turn on acne in both males and females. WHAT??? Wait a minute! What does all that mumbo-jumbo mean? Well, to put it in simply: Hormones in milk react with the hormones in your body to increase the production of sebum—that oily substance that clogs your pores and results in zits.

In 2006, a three-year-study examined food consumption as well as the frequency and amount of acne experienced by over 6,000 girls between the ages of 9 and 15. This study found positive associations between acne and the intake of total milk, whole milk, low-fat milk, and skim milk.[note]American Academy of Dermatology: Diet and Acne[/note]

Does this mean you should cut milk out of your diet completely? NO! But if you’re experiencing acne or an outbreak, it is important to see a professional for a complete and accurate diagnosis. He or she can eliminate causes of your acne based on a number of other contributing factors like hormones, genetics and stress.

And while the exact cause of acne remains a mystery, there are products available that can treat it without harsh chemicals or medications that have severe side effects including death!
